BREAKING GROUND

Breaking Ground, a Take Care docuseries, follows four young Asian Canadians on their journey to positive mental health. They unpack and confront the cultural, language, and generational barriers in their lives as they forge a path for others to follow. In an era where anti-Asian discrimination is a pressing issue, Breaking Ground hopes to facilitate thoughtful conversation about the visibility of being Asian.

Wali Shah (he/him) is a proud Muslim poet and immigrant from Pakistan. He was on top of the world performing for Barack Obama and freestyling with Kendrick Lamar before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now at home, Wali connects with his Muslim identity and faith despite facing Islamophobia. This recommitment informs his art and his new mission to not only take care of his mental health but his community as well.

They discovered burlesque as a form of expression and created their alter ego, Tygr Willy. Through the power of community and performance , Ty balances these identities in a world that pushes labels.

Brittany Nguyen (she/her) is a Vietnamese filmmaker from Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Brittany’s mother was her connection to her Vietnamese roots and to her extended family. After losing her mother to cancer before graduating high school, that was severed . Now, as she tries to make a reconnection, she reflects on what it really means to be “authentically” Asian.
